It is such an exciting time for Jeffersonville, and I am proud to live and work here. Often we overlook all the great things happening right in our back yard, so I want to share with you (in no particular order) the top 10 reasons I love our city!
Check out www.jeffmainstreet.org to see for yourself! A few of my favs are: The Parlour, Pearl Street Coffee and Games, Blessings on Spring, Lavender Hill, Sugar Maples, The Springs Salon and Spa (just to name a few). Honestly I love them all and everyone has their own favs. In case you wondered, the sidewalks don’t roll up at night! There are lots of fun places to grab a bite, drink or listen to music!
2. THE RIVER OF COURSE!
Upfront and personal! Including boat ramps and a lovely marina, we truly have the views on the Indiana side! Dine with a view, grab an ice-cream, rent a bicycle, watch a concert at our fabulous RiverStage, Hike or Bike the Greenway – www.ohiorivergreenway,org. Better yet buy a condo and enjoy it EVERY day and sit on your balcony while listening and watching the Belle of Louisville go by!
Let’s start with Schimpff’s Confectionery. The Schimpff’s Candy Store has been on Spring Street since 1871! They were even featured on the History Channel –http://www.schimpffs.com/history_channel.html.
Above I mentioned the Belle of Louisville – she docks in the Ville but we enjoy her just the same! She was built in 1914 and if she could only talk! Check out her adventures:
Speaking of Steamboats, we have a fantastic Steamboat Museum! www.howardsteamboatmuseum.org
Fire Engine Museum, www.vintagefiremuseumorg
Historic Bed & Breakfast – www.InnonMarket.com
Our history is extensive, and I will have to write a separate blog just about the history because there is SO much!
4. Arts District!
I’m a little out of my comfort zone here BUT I can proudly say that I took a class and made a beautiful ‘Tree of Life’ mosaic this past year at one of the many classes offered. In Jeffersonville you will find that we celebrate art and our artists in very creative ways. One of the things you will notice when you drive through Jeffersonville is our resident artists have painted our electric boxes (Google it – it’s a thing). We have murals celebrating our history, decorated lantern parades, art classes and opportunities for all ages to get hands on with artistic creation. If I ask nicely, I might be able to get the President of the Jeffersonville Arts Alliance (and fellow RE/MAX First Realtor) Abigail Richmer to write a blog for me about all the wonderful things going on with the arts in our community!
5. PARKS! PARKS! AND MORE PARKS!
Parks, ball fields, aquatic center, and new Chapel Lake Park on the East side with trails, lakes and pavilions currently being developed! We also have public golf courses and soccer fields! Jeffersonville is a stone’s throw away (literally) from the Falls of The Ohio State Park with THE oldest exposed fossil beds in the WORLD and Charlestown State Park to the north. A short drive further north and you can explore waterfalls at Clifty Falls State Park. You are never far from adventure!
6. Jeffersonville Township Public Library
Okay I’m gonna get my geek on! Our library is absolutely the best public library I have ever had the privilege of patronizing. It is AWESOME! Always offering events for all ages and a fantastic, friendly staff that cares about our community! www.Jefflibrary.org
7. Outdoor Events All Year Long!
Here’s a few of the big ones but there are SOO many! RiverStage events, Concerts in the Park, Steamboat Nights, Cookie Stroll, Wine Walk, Thunder Over Louisville, Abbey Road on the River , Easter Egg Hunt, and a fantastic Farmers Market! Here’s the calendar: https://www.jeffmainstreet.org/events/category/event/
8. Big Four Walking Bridge!
WOW!!! Lights – Music – street musicians – all while walking above the boats and barges. When I walk the bridge I say I am ‘above the cares of the world.’ The diversity on the bridge is truly spectacular and something you must experience for yourself to understand. https://louisvillewaterfront.com/explore-the-park/features/big-4-bridge/
9. A community who Cares!
So many wonderful organizations and churches that have that special way of filling the niches and needs in our community. If you are looking for a place to volunteer to make a difference, you can find comrades in any area of social service or civic involvement. Jeffersonville’s City Pride has many beautification projects and makes our whole town bloom with creative flowering projects such as our Bicycle Planters (another future Blog to come)! There are too many wonderful groups to mention but feel free to send me an email or text if you are looking for a place to get involved.
10. Our Neighbors to the South!
I would be remiss if I didn’t say that one of my 10 favorite things about living in Jeffersonville is being right across the river from Louisville, KY. We are a small town with the big city amenities at our fingertips. Ky Center for the Arts, Actors Theatre, YUM Center, Festival of Faiths, St. James Court Art Show, and of course THE KENTUCKY DERBY. The Derby is a full 2 weeks of festivities on BOTH sides of the river. We take it very seriously. Derby Fever is something to consider when moving here and something you will not find anywhere else in the world.
I will kick myself for all the things I have forgotten to include in this article. There are just too many aspects of Jeffersonville to include in one article! If you are searching for homes or thinking about moving to Jeffersonville, it’s a move you won’t regret. I’ll help you find the perfect home – and equally enjoy helping you get connected to the people, places and FUN!
As always, thanks for reading and sharing! If you have things you love about Jeffersonville or would like highlighted, I would love to hear from you! MUAH!
